Bonjour, mon ami! For this pairing we are going to France. I woke up this morning and used my Julia Child “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” for the first time to make a Quiche Lorraine. I took my portable record player into the kitchen and laid down a very special album. I first heard of Michel Legrand because I found an empty record sleeve for “The New I Love Paris” at my grandmother’s house. When I then came across the actual record at a store I had to have it. So as I boiled my bacon (yep), I listened to “La Vie en Rose” and “I Love Paris”. You could almost see the Eiffel Tower. Because it was on the album cover. This cinematic rendering of some French born classics paired beautifully with the Quiche. It highlighted the subtle hints of nutmeg and brought a familiarity to the cafe noisette (espresso with a touch of hot milk). This album also provided, not just an atmosphere, but a teleportational experience of preparing for the first bite in North Carolina and enjoying the rest of the quiche at a quaint bistro along the Champs-Élysées.
